Get a free Microsoft Azure Translator key

Step by step, open a free Azure Translator account (2,000,000 characters a month) and paste its key and region into Plainstamp.

Azure Translator's free tier translates up to 2,000,000 characters a month at no cost. It takes about 10 minutes. Microsoft's screens change from time to time, so a name may be slightly different from what's written here.

1. Open an Azure account#

  1. Go to portal.azure.com and sign in with a Microsoft account, or create one.

  2. If you don't have an Azure subscription yet, follow the steps to create a free one. Microsoft asks for a card to check who you are. The free Translator tier below isn't charged.

2. Create a Translator resource#

  1. In the search box at the top of the Azure portal, type Translator and open it.

  2. Click Create.

  3. Fill in:

    • Subscription: the one you just made.

    • Resource group: click Create new and type a name like plainstamp.

    • Region: one close to you, for example East US. Write it down.

    • Name: any name, for example yourcompany-translate.

    • Pricing tier: Free F0. This is the free tier. Don't pick S1, which is paid.

  4. Click Review + create, then Create. Wait for Your deployment is complete, then click Go to resource.

An Azure subscription can have one free F0 Translator. If Free F0 isn't offered, you already have one: use that one's key.

3. Copy the key and region#

  1. On the Translator's page, in the menu on the left, open Keys and Endpoint (under Resource Management).

  2. Click the copy button next to KEY 1.

  3. Note Location/Region, for example eastus.

4. Paste them into Plainstamp#

  1. In Plainstamp, go to Settings, then Language & translation.

  2. Under Translation for this workspace, choose Do it yourself · free.

  3. Translation service: Microsoft Azure Translator.

  4. Paste the key into API key, and type the region (like eastus) into Region (Location).

  5. Click Test and turn on.

If you see "Azure didn't accept the key", check the region matches the one on the Keys and Endpoint page, and that you copied the whole key.

Next: set your team's languages.
